Activities in Mase

The Val d'Hérens is one of the most authentic valleys in the Swiss Alps, an unspoilt area where nature, traditions and mountain lifestyle come together. In summer and winter alike, the valley offers a multitude of activities for all tastes: panoramic hikes between mountain huts and alpine pastures, skiing in natural alpine areas, varied mountain bike trails, cultural discoveries in typical villages or immersion in local traditions such as cow fighting. Dominated by iconic peaks and shaped by a strong pastoral history, the Val d'Hérens offers a timeless experience, ideal for those seeking authenticity, tranquillity and the richness of the Valais landscapes.

Skiing

The Val d'Hérens offers an exceptional variety of skiing opportunities, combining authentic ski areas with access to one of the largest ski areas in Europe. In Arolla and Evolène, skiers enjoy natural slopes, generous snowfall and a preserved alpine atmosphere. La Forclaz, perched above the valley, offers a small, friendly family ski area, ideal for beginners and families, as well as privileged access to some of the most beautiful ski touring routes in the area. Further down the valley, Nax–Mont Noble offers sunny skiing with panoramic views on the slopes overlooking the Rhône. For those seeking a larger ski area, the 4 Vallées — accessible via Les Masses or Thyon 2000 — offer hundreds of kilometres of slopes and renowned freeride routes allowing you to travel as far as Verbier.  Finally, the Val d'Hérens is a mecca for ski touring, with remarkable routes to the Pointe de Vouasson, the Mont de l'Étoile and the wild combes of Arolla. A complete destination, ideal for all styles of skiing.

Mountain Bike

In summer, the slopes of Mase and the entire Val d'Hérens become a prime playground for mountain biking. Numerous trails wind through forests, mountain pastures and alpine meadows, connecting Mase to Nax, La Combaz, La Forclaz and the Loveignoz mountain pasture. The varied trails, some rolling, some more technical, offer panoramic descents and superb crossings above the valley. Cyclists can also join the marked trails of the Val d'Hérens and access longer routes, including sustained climbs, alpine single tracks and enduro trails. An ideal setting for cycling enthusiasts in search of nature, elevation and authenticity.

Cow Fighting

The Val d'Hérens also has a strong cultural identity linked to the Hérens cow, an iconic breed in the region. Powerful, proud and elegant, these black cows are known for their strong temperament and for cow fighting, natural contests in which the animals establish their hierarchy without violence or human intervention.
Every year, Les Haudères becomes one of the highlights of the cow fighting season, with traditional contests where Hérens cows naturally compete to establish their hierarchy. Nestled in the heart of the Val d'Hérens, the village hosts one of the most iconic events of the season, attracting breeders, enthusiasts and visitors who come to discover this ancient tradition. Set against the majestic backdrop of the surrounding peaks, the Les Haudères arena provides a spectacular setting for these unique encounters, which celebrate the strength, character and nobility of the Hérens cow. This event, deeply rooted in local culture, is a highlight of life in the valley and a living testimony to its pastoral heritage.
